Representation In Shameless

Shameless is a TV show that follows the Gallagher family, a group of people struggling to survive in a tough Chicago neighborhood. The show centers on Frank, the family's alcoholic father, and his six children: Lip, Fiona, Debbie, Carl, Liam, and Ian.

The show offers a nuanced exploration of various marginalized groups, including working-class families, LGBTQ+ individuals, and people with disabilities. It accurately depicts the struggles and resilience of these groups, challenging stereotypes and promoting understanding. Shameless has been criticized for potentially exoticizing certain aspects of working-class life, particularly those related to poverty and crime. Some argue that the show's portrayal of these elements can be sensationalized, reducing complex social issues to stereotypes or entertainment value.

For example, the show portrays the challenges faced by working-class families, such as poverty, unemployment, and lack of opportunities. It also highlights the strength and resilience of these families, showing how they support each other and overcome adversity.

Frank's alcoholism is portrayed in a realistic way, highlighting both the physical and emotional consequences of addiction. His behavior can be harmful and abusive, and he often prioritizes drinking over his responsibilities. However, the show also offers glimpses of Frank's vulnerability and pain, suggesting that his addiction is a coping mechanism for deeper issues.

Similarly, Shameless offers a positive representation of LGBTQ+ characters. Ian Gallagher, the youngest child, is openly gay and has a complex and nuanced relationship with Mickey Milkovich. Their relationship is portrayed with sensitivity and realism, challenging stereotypes and promoting acceptance. Shameless offers a diverse range of characters and storylines, allowing viewers to connect with different perspectives and experiences. However, the show's selection of characters and themes can also be limited. For example, while the show features a diverse cast of LGBTQ+ characters, it may not fully represent the experiences of all LGBTQ+ individuals. Additionally, the show's focus on poverty and crime may not accurately reflect the experiences of all working-class people.

Sound Project

This project lead me to find out that basically no sounds in movies are actually recorded during the filming process, rather recorded completely separate and edited in. I learned that sound is a very large thing within productions and in some cases may be the only way emotion is portrayed in some films. Sound is also very intricate and is almost never just one ongoing clip of sound yet multiple overlayed within each other. For this project each group was to create a story only using sound and nothing else including the use of foley sounds giving video recording of those sounds being created.

The story is about a student walking around the outside of their school with many different noises and sounds on their way to the library and then the sudden change to a very quiet and calm room where you can hear almost everything going on around the room. My partner and I decided to film the foley sounds in the order in which it was convenient for us to do at school and we were still able to redo the clips if needed. During brainstorming my partner and I thought out how the story would look in the mind of the listener and made sure to add key sounds like cars and whatnot to help pain an image in the listeners head. The outline helped us keep the story line straight and not to mix it up when recording and also broke down what we were doing so neither of us got confused. Right here is a picture of our outline.

The editing source that we utilized was Adobe premier and although giving us a few challenges to start with we eventually got the hang of it. I do think that was was done well was the addition of many sounds like the car horn and the other small sounds to help portray an image.

OWF

This project was based off an assigned word given to each group and we had to make a short film with a story relating to the word focusing on editing and filming techniques.

My partner and I decided to make an imaginary relationship calling it "fanciful" our given word as it was all in the girls mind and not reality. We chose to film during class using one of our classmates as the guy the girl was obsessed over. we used a tripod set up in the hallway for some scenes and the tripod was also used in the classroom to capture the girl sitting at her desk in multiple different shots and angles. During brainstorming we were able to break down the scenes individually and really helped us plan out how we were going to do things along with providing us with more ideas as we had things thought out and planned even better.

The brainstorm sheet as a sneak peak is shown above helped us visualize what exactly we were going to fill along with what could be added to make it better the day of filming. I had used imovie as my computer decided to act up the day of editing and it sufficed for what we had to do for this project.

I would personally say that our filming was done pretty well as we utilized many different shots and the story line was exceptionally interesting. What could have been improved was my editing as imovie was not the best platform to use and the film could have been edited much better.

Shots Project

For a project that I am doing I had to take photos with a partner using different angles and shots to tell a story in 15 different photos.

We were discussing the story and didn't know what to do the project about we were confused and lost but I had the great idea on making it juicy, making it basically catching a cheater.

I think the story line is something we put together very well and thought out perfectly but we can definitely improve on the pictures taken trying to keep hands out the photos and adding some more details that can tie in the story.
